Andre Norton's "Storm Over Warlock" was first published back in 1960 and is the first in her "Forerunner" series. It's one of several of her pre-1964 books that, for some reason, have fallen into the public domain. By 1950/1960 standards, it's a pretty good book (good writing, plot, world-building). By today's standards, it might be a little thin or linear. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a good, straight-forward book. One thing, though: I can't figure out if it's a Young Adult book or not. There are a lot of YA elements in the book, but the writing does seem more mature than what passes for YA these days. In particular, the protagonist seems a bit old for YA (he's actually a young adult instead of the old child they use these days). I guess that's a good thing. There's nothing in the book that would preclude young people from reading it, and the writing is mature enough that we oldsters can enjoy it too. I'm rating it at a Decent 3 stars out of 5.

The novels in Andre Norton's "Forerunner" series are:

1. Warlock (includes "Storm Over Warlock," "Ordeal in Otherwhere," and "Forerunner Foray")
2. The Forerunner Factor (includes "Forerunner," and "Forerunner: The Second Venture")

Storm Over Warlock Andre Norton 9781374935808 Books Reviews

Decades ago I found the first couple of chapters luring on the side of an Arizona road; today I finished the entire novel. Though well worth the wait, wish I hadn't had to. Unfortunately, as the saying goes Life intervened. A very well written novel, holding true to the primary theme of her works with wonderful character and plot development.
A very nice yarn filled with adventure. Not quite as good as some of Norton's other works bot still very enjoyable.
Andre Norton added an element to science fiction that was missing before her works. There is a focus here on the individual as a well-rounded person, not just a cardboard cutout moving through the plot. Compare this book to a Twilight novel to sharpen the sense of contrast--this is a storyteller AND a writer. When you understand why the protagonist does something, and believe it, you are leaving potboilers behind and entering the world of literature. Read it, enjoy it, and then start looking at some of her other works from the same period. Good stuff!!
A good read! A little slow paced but I was hooked! Like starting beyond story beginning but intriguing edge of seat hook. Liked wolverines.... wanted more! Good read for teens and young adults!
I remember reading Andre Norton's book as a kid 50+ years ago, and this on returned lots of memories of wander the shelves of books in the library. I discovered lots of worlds, alien, and heroes. This book was great to read then and now, enjoy it when you read it.
I read this book when I was about fourteen, over fifty years ago. I remember my English teacher chastising me for reading cheap literature, rather than something worthwhile. Do English teachers not realize that if you read Norton at age fourteen, you might be reading Tolstoy when your 25? I made that transition anyway. I am now a teacher (science, not English) and I would never discourage anyone from reading what they enjoy reading. There is no reason for adults to read this book other than nostalgia, but it's still worth reading for youngsters.
Andre Norton was one of the three authors who led me into the wonderful worlds of sci-fi...Norton, Heinlein, and Asimov.
As a youngster of I would sit for hours immersed in their worlds. Norton was the one who could always scare me...my pulse would race and a frisson of fear would run up and down my back as I read her tales of strange planets and alien people s.
Rereading Storm Over Warlock was like coming back an old friend and I loved my return visit. Norton always had a way of taking a character who was a bit of an outsider and making them the most interesting person in the book and the one you cared about.
Even though her stories are decades old they are still entertaining and well worth reading.
